Committed to the Veterans of Our Great Nation

On-going activities of the NVMC

The long held tradition of the Norwalk Memorial Day Parade continues this year, on Monday, May 26th at 9 AM. A host of civic organizations, youth groups, and athletic teams will march, being lead by the Norwalk Police Department Honor Guard. Following close behind will be the Honor Guard of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, marching just slightly ahead of this year’s Grand Marshal.

An Act, approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday - a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history, Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." This year, a ceremony put together by the NVMC will be proceeded by a band concert at 9:30 AM, with the official ceremony beginning at 10:30 AM.

Activities

The annual ceremony at the Shea-Magrath Memorial will take place this year on Sunday, May 18, at 1:00 p.m. The program will begin with a band concert by the Brien McMahon Wind Ensemble at 12:30 p.m. The ceremony gets underway at 1:00 p.m. with the presentation of massed colors.
The ceremony not only honors Norwalk's two most heroic sons (Medal of Honor recipients Daniel Shea and John Magrath), but all 169 Norwalkers who paid the supreme sacrifice while serving their country from World War II until the present time.
